Brief History of the Kent County Football League

Now known as the Vandanel Kent County Football League, the League was founded in 1922 and originally called the Kent Amateur League operating with two Regional Committees.

To bring the two regions closer together an Inter-Regional Challenge Cup was instituted in 1987 that gave clubs in the higher divisions an opportunity to broaden their horizons. As a forerunner to a promotion and relegation link between the Kent County League and the Kent League a countywide Premier Division was formed in 1992 with two Regional Divisions 1’s feeding into it. The League joined the National League System for clubs operating outside the Football League in 1993 thus creating a direct promotion and relegation link with the Kent League, the concept being that ambitious and progressive clubs had a fully structured system in place for progression up the ‘non league ladder’.

In 1995 it was decided to streamline the administration and bring the whole league under a single Management Committee.

The League were delighted that in 1997 VCD Athletic, having been declared Premier Division Champions, were promoted to the then Winstonlead Kent League in their own right. In 2003 Sevenoaks Town were crowned Premier Division Champions and also promoted to the Kent League. Success for our Clubs has continued with Faversham Town gaining promotion in 2006 by finishing runners-up to Lewisham Borough (Community) who were unable to be promoted due to ground deficiencies, with further promotions being emulated by Holmesdale in 2007 and Norton Sports the following season.

The present constitution comprises 70 clubs and 96 teams which include a countywide Premier Division and six other regional divisions that include two reserve divisions. In addition there are four cup competitions together with a Champions Trophy match at the beginning of each season with the proceeds of the latter being donated to charity.

The Management Committee were highly honoured and extremely proud when the League was selected to represent England in the 3rd UEFA Regions’ Cup in 2002. This resulted in a memorable trip to Tallinn in Estonia with us playing group matches against San Marino, Czech Republic and Estonia, finishing runners-up behind the eventual group winners, the Czech Republic.
