28th Aug 2010    Woodstock Park 1 v 6 Lewisham Borough (Community)

It was lesson learnt as Borough put right all that was wrong last week.

From the first whistle Lewisham put Woodstock on the back foot with a high tempo game giving Woodstock no time at all to settle. After 5 minutes, Borough missed 2 'must score' opportunities and were wondering whether it would be their day. Borough pressed forward and with good feet and a powerful shot from Weston, the keeper could only parry, leading to an instinctive poachers header from Sinclair.

Borough were really in the mood and created several more chances but were unable to convert, this was credit to Woodstock's players who refused to lye down and put a foot in to prevent Borough having easy chances. On the stroke of half time, wing magician Morris drilled a shot hard and low taking a deflection on it's way, to send Borough in 2 - 0.

Harsh words must have been said at half time as Woodstock came out with much more intent, matching the will and determination of the Borough players but it was Brown who struck with a powerful left foot drive to send Borough 3 - 0 up. Woodstock came straight back scoring a well deserved goal, making it 3 - 1.

It was game on as both teams began to play some good football. However, it was Lewisham who were more creative and clinical in the final third, scoring a further 3 goals through McBean and Brown completing his brace. The best goal of them all was Sinclair equalling Brown's brace with a stunning header from the edge of the box from an audacious outside of the boot cross from man of the match Morris, capping a fine move.

21st Aug 2010   Rusthall 3 v 1 Lewisham Borough (Community)

Lewisham went into this fixture relying on their attractive football to get them all three points, but an organised, tough and dogged Rusthall had other ideas as they outfought Borough to victory. From the kick off Rusthall's high energy game gave Lewisham not much time to settle. Borough were just getting into their stride and starting to pass the ball well, when Rusthall took a deserved lead just after the first 15. Lewisham dominated the remainder of the first half, creating one or two chances but not really causing Rusthall that many problems.

The second half saw Borough dominate, creating several chances but it was Rusthall that increased the deficit against the run of play. Lewisham pressed looking for a way back into the game, but again were denied on two or three occasions. As they pressed it was Rusthall who increased their lead to 3 on the counter.

Michael Brown managed to snatch a late consolation goal but it was too late as the game was beyond Lewisham.

Lewisham may feel a little hard done by but on the balance of things, Rusthall's 100% spirit and endeavour led them to a deserved win.

28th Aug 2010   Bearsted 0 v 7 Cray Valley (PM) - REPORT FROM CRAY VALLEY (PM) FC

Luke Hewitt’s first hat-trick for the club was the highlight of the afternoon as Cray ran out emphatic winners against a beleaguered Bearsted side. A brace for Matt Knuckey, a first goal of the season from Player of the Year Jamie Miller and an own goal completed the rout.

Manager Willie O’Sullivan was over the moon with his side’s performance but quickly pointed out that the season was a marathon and not a sprint, and with 27 League games to go it was far too early to talk about promotion to the Kent League. O’Sullivan was able to name an unchanged line up and welcomed new left back Jack Baines into the squad for the first time.

Cray started slowly and it was Bearsted that created the first goal scoring opportunity. Confusion between the two centre backs Matthews and Munday led to a free shot on goal but keeper Back did well to deflect it wide with his outstretched right leg. An early warning but Cray quickly took control and started to dominate the midfield. Striker  Knuckey was a constant threat all afternoon and the early chances fell to him. Captain Paul Springett was invariably involved in the build up play and although Knuckey did well to create space in the box his first attempt was off the mark and his second well saved by keeper Andrews.

Cray eventually took the lead in the 30th minute. Miller collected the ball in midfield and drove into the penalty area. He laid the ball back to Springett whose pinpoint cross to the far post was headed back across the goal to Miller who nodded into an open net from a yard out. The goal inspired Cray and gradually Joe Bingham became more influential. He almost extended the lead in the 40th minute, but his powerful shot was turned away by Andrews.

A minute later it was 2-0! Bingham found himself in a similar position but instead of shooting he elected to square the ball for Hewitt to open his account for the season. The Bearsted players appeared shell shocked and immediately after the re-start full back Healy won the ball, and made a driving run into the box but shot narrowly wide.  Cray still had time to score a third before half time when Knuckey crossed from the left for Hewitt to rise unchallenged and head home.

With a three goal advantage at the break Cray could have easily taken their foot off the pedal in the second half. However, they seized the initiative early on and within 5 minutes were 4-0 up! The partnership between striker’s Knuckey and Hewitt is developing with every game and it was Hewitt’s turn to return the compliment for Knuckey, who beat the off-side trap and latched on to an excellent through ball by Hewitt, before lobbing the ball over the advancing keeper and heading into the empty net.

Inevitably Bearsted created some chances but their finishing let them down. With a four goal cushion Lee Warren made way for Jack Baines to make his debut and Callum O’Sullivan replaced the injured Joe Matthews. Cray continued to pressurise the Bearsted goal and were awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute when Knuckey was fouled. Springet’s well struck shot was brilliantly saved by Andrews but in an attempt to clear the ball defender Stevens put through his own net.

By now Cray were rampant and Knuckey added a sixth with a brilliantly taken free kick and a fantastic long ball by Aulsford was collected by Hewitt who drove unchallenged into the area to complete his hat trick.

On a day when every Cray player was outstanding it was difficult to pick a Man of the Match. However, two of Cray’s unsung heroes played out of their skin - James Aulsford and Ben Healy, with Healey just getting the nod. His driving runs down both flacks caused Bearsted problems all afternoon and created the time and space for his colleagues to constantly expose any weaknesses. In summary though, a brilliant performance by everyone involved!

Cray: Back, Lee Warren (Baines), Healy, Springett, Aulsford, Matthews (O’Sullivan), Munday, Miller, Bingham (Myles Warren), Knuckey, Hewitt.  Unused subs: Matano

28th Aug 2010   Bearsted 0 v 7 Cray Valley (PM) - REPORT FROM BEARSTED FC

The first half an hour of this game was very even, with both sides having chances to score. Bearsted created the first real chance on 5 mins, when Tom McParland burst through the middle and was denied by the outstretched leg of veteran goalkeeper Stuart Back in the Cray Valley goal. On 8 mins Matt Knuckley forced a fine save from Scott Andrews with a powerful shot. As the game unfolded half chances were bring created at both ends with neither side being able to take advantage, and on 20 mins the ball came back off the Cray crossbar from a goalmouth scramble. The game kicked into life on 340 mins after good build up play from the Cray right wing an unchallenged header from Jamie Miller gave the visitors the lead, this seemed to knock the stuffing out of the home side allowing Cray to up their game and start dictating play. After 40 mins Scott Andrews was again called upon to deny Cray with a fine save from a close range pile driver from Luke Hewitt. A minute later Hewitt was on hand to head home Cray's second goal, again from some excellent approach play from the visitors.  Sadly for the home side Cray increased their lead to 3 goals when on the stroke of half time Hewitt took advantage of some poor defending to score a very soft goal.

The home faithful were now fearful of what was to come in the second half, and unfortunately their fears were realised.

Within a minute of the restart Matt Knuckley increased Cray's lead. With the visitors now in full control bearsted were restricted to a couple of Steve Smith shots fired over the bar. Once again Andrews was called upon to make a number of fine saves to keep the score down, and he was extremely unlucky after 74 mins to save a Knuckley penalty only to see the rebound slice into his own net by the unfortunate Ricky Stevens. Then on 79 mins Matt Knuckley rifled home a powerful 23 yard free kick. the rout was completed when Hewitt scored his 3rd and Cray's seventh goal with a rocket of a shot after a direct run on goal.

Unfortunately the home side are battling through an unprecedented period of unavailability due to weddings, holidays, birthday jaunts and injuries. Lets all hope this situation improves quickly. There is a  'Razor' of hope Robbie Hayward, ever confident club captain, starts training this week after surgery.

Bearsted Team: S Andrews, J Malone, R Stevens, G Owen, D Phillips, J Dunk, J Bat, T McParland, R McLeish, S Smith, S Porter.

All subs used: B McParland, M Stapley, A Godman.

21st Aug 2010  Cray Valley (PM) 2 v 0 Phoenix Sports

Two late goals from prolific scorer Matt Knuckey secured a much deserved victory against local rivals Phoenix Sports. However, it was skipper Paul ‘Geordie’ Springett that stole the limelight as he rolled back the years to put in a magnificent performance in the centre of the park. Geordie was competing in midfield against former Cray favourite Joe Fitzpatrick but on the day he comfortably won the dual as Cray gained some compensation for their Kent Intermediate Shield final defeat last season.

With Callum O’Sullivan and Paul Votier both unavailable for selection, manager Willie O’Sullivan was forced to reshape the midfield. Defender James Aulsford filled in at left midfield, Springett moved into his more favourable central position and young Joe Bingham was given his debut on the right hand side. Bingham looks a fine prospect and hopefully he’ll follow in the footsteps of his older brother Billy - a professional footballer at Dagenham & Redbridge!

Like most derby games it was a competitive affair and it was Springett that set the scene by receiving a yellow card for a late challenge on defender Frost within 2 minutes of the start!  Cray started brightly in front of a large crowd and striker Luke Hewitt tested the keeper early on with a fierce shot from an acute angle which was comfortably saved. Springett should have put Cray ahead after 10 minutes when he played a neat one-two with Knuckey but with just the keeper to beat he side footed his shot wide of the upright.

With Springetts partner Jamie Miller challenging for every loose ball in the middle of the park and the defence once again giving little away Cray continued to push for the all important opening goal. The deadlock was almost broken after 30 minutes when great approach play by Healy and Miller resulted in a rasping drive from 30 yards by Springett that was touched over the bar.

It was inevitable that despite all the pressure, Phoenix would create some chances and they almost took the lead in the 43 minute. A rare lapse of concentration gave the Phoenix centre forward an opportunity to shoot but although his shot beat the advancing keeper Back, Healy was able to cover around and cleared the ball off the line. An entertaining first half but no goals!

Cray could easily have been disheartened by their inability to convert any of their first half attempts but   started the second period with the same positive attitude. Almost immediately, Hewitt and Springett combined to allow Knuckey to shoot but although he beat the keeper, defender Frost was on hand to save the day with a goal line clearance. The assistant referee even commented “this has got 0-0 written all over it!”

It was certainly a day to feel sorry for the substitutes. The original 11 named player’s were all playing out of their skins, and it was difficult to see how any substitutions would positively influence the game. All Cray needed was a bit more luck in front of the goal. When the Phoenix keeper pulled off a magnificent safe from Springett’s header on the hour mark and his voracious follow up shot struck the post and rebounded back into play it did seem that the assistant referee’s remark was spot on!

Alfie Harris had a good chance to put Phoenix ahead but his shot was well saved by Back and then almost immediately a bad back pass at the other was seized on by Hewitt but on this occasion it was the Phoenix keeper that managed to keep the shot out.

The breakthrough finally came with 10 minutes remaining. Bingham found some space wide on the right and his excellent low cross was well controlled by Knuckey before he fired the ball past the helpless keeper from close range. Cray were forced to make a late substitution when Healy twisted his ankle and it was his replacement Antonio Matano that helped seal the game in the 85 minute. A poor clearance was headed back towards the Phoenix goal and Knuckey latched onto in and calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Cray: Back, Lee Warren, Healy (Matano), Springett, Aulsford, Matthews, Munday, Miller, Bingham, Knuckey, Hewitt.  Unused subs: Myles Warren, Ingram, Bullock

Premier Division

21st Aug 2010  Tonbridge Invicta 2 vs 2 Bearsted

The result on balance was probably the right one bearing in mind Bearsted’s amount of possession and their opponent’s having been in front for much of the game. Maybe the sign of things to come was when a Sam Portor corner was headed back for Danny Wright to send in a spectacular volley, only for him to be denied by a superb save by goalkeeper Bryan Wesson. However it was the home side who were to be the ones who were to go in front after 20 minutes in somewhat of a fortunate manner. Firstly, when they were awarded a corner following a scuffed effort on goal by Andy Thomas. The outcome of which being a goal following what appeared to be a foul on goalkeeper Scott Andrews, which allowed the ball to fall and be put away by Danny Black following a series of goaline clearances. Although the away side had a few opportunities to get back on level terms, far too often they failed to capitalise on the astute crosses of Portor from the left.

Immediately after the break Tonbridge were very unlucky not to have extended their lead when Thomas sprang the offside trap to run clear through only to see his goalbound shot come back out off of the post and be cleared to safety. Indeed this was not to be the first time that the Bears defence had been stretched and it was only due to some last ditch defensive tactics that the score remained the same. However Invicta did not have much longer to wait until a right wing corner was tucked away by Dave East from close range. Immediately after, things could well have got worse when what appeared to be a penalty following another run on goal by Thomas, was adjudged to be a foul outside of the box, a decision endorsed by the linesman’s flag. With twenty minutes remaining the game took a turn when a firmly hit left wing corner by Steve Smith was turned into his own net past Wesson by defender Matt Thompson. This strike and the introduction of Jason Batt set up the contest for an interesting finale. This indeed did turn out to be the case as Bearsted threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Their efforts were rewarded with 10 minutes remaining when a Jonno Moran pass found Wright, for him to cross to the back post for Tom Rogers to volley into the net to earn the point they were looking for.

14th Aug 2010  Bly Spartans 1 vs 1 Cray Valley (PM)

Considering the turbulent summer and the lack of pre-season preparation (3 of the 5 pre-season friendlies were cancelled for various reasons, Cray started their campaign with a well deserved point away to Bly. With a bit more luck, and certainly better finishing, they could have easily left Strood with all 3.

With new club captain Tommy Martin and new summer signing Jack Baines unavailable for selection manager Willie O’Sullivan gave Lee Warren his full debut and named 3 more of his new signings on the bench. Warren slotted in at right back with versatile Ben Healy switching to the left. With the exception of Luke Hewitt, (making his return to the side after a year’s break), the remainder of the team had a familiar look about it. In fact only two of last season’s successful squad have decided to leave for pastures new, Joe Fitzpatrick and Alex Prall, and the club wishes them both well.

As the home team, Bly started with more urgency and had the better of the early exchanges. Chances for both sides however were very sparse and despite having the greater possession, Bly failed to create any opportunities. Cray’s successes last season were built on the back of a solid defence and once again the back four, marshalled by the excellent Joe Matthews, gave very little away.

The first chance of the game fell to Cray in the 18th minute. A long clearance by keeper Back fell to last season’s top scorer Matt Knuckey, but his delicate flick could only hit the outside of the post with Bly’s keeper Mullen stranded. Within 2 minutes another chance was created when fine interplay between O’Sullivan and Springett presented the Cray skipper with an opening but his shot went narrowly wide.

Despite Cray gaining the initiative it was the home side that scored the opening goal of the game. A somewhat theatrical dive by Penfold when challenged in the box led to the referee awarding a rather dubious penalty. The striker recovered quickly in order to take the resulting spot kick himself and he coolly passed the ball into the opposite corner to the keeper’s dive.

In spite of going a goal down Cray responded well and could have levelled before half time if well created chances by Hewitt and O’Sullivan had been converted. The visitors should have been awarded a penalty on the half hour mark when Hewitt was clearly fouled, but the ref waved play on and Springett could only fire over the bar as the players from both sides paused, certain that he was going to point to the spot.

Cray finally pulled level just after the re-start with an excellently worked goal. Matthews collected the ball deep in his own half and drove forward 40-50 yards into Bly’s last third. He fed Hewitt who had pulled wide on the right and his perfect cross pass was converted at the far post by Matt Knuckey.

Cray continued to press for the winner and Springett, O’Sullivan and Votier made way for Sharpe and debutants Bullock and Aulsford. Further chances were created and all three substitutes could have scored the winner. The best chance fell to Sharpe who was cleverly put through by Bullock but although his low shot beat the keeper it hit the post and went behind for a goal kick.

Overall a satisfying performance and although Miller and Hewitt in particular had good games on the day the man of the match was Joe Matthews with an outstanding display at centre back.

Cray: Back, Lee Warren, Healy, Springett (Bullock), Votier (Auslford), Matthews, Munday, Miller, O’Sullivan (Sharpe), Knuckey, Hewitt. Unused subs: Myles Warren, Moore

Premier Division

14th Aug 2010  Bearsted 0 vs 3 Stansfeld O&B Club

With Bearsted finding themselves a team in transition and playing against last year’s champions the result might be seen as somewhat satisfactory from their point of view. However this would not do justice to the effort and endeavour that they put in. Indeed for 20 minutes the exchanges were even and it was mainly down to a misguided clearance that the breakthrough came about. The outcome saw Terry Forsyth picking up the ball to pass into the path of Alfie Nunn to set up Charlie Howard to steer the ball past goalkeeper Scott Andrews. Immediately after however the score might have been evened when a Paul Joyce half volley went just over after getting onto the end of a neat through ball from Matt Hunt. Sadly for the home side the score was further increased soon after when the alert Howard spotted the Bearsted stopper of his line to send in a sublime lob from the halfway line and into the net. With the Bears now on the back foot the game had the potential for becoming much worse for them. However this was not to be mainly due to Andrews who on two occasions became his side’s saviour saving at the feet of first Nunn and then Howard Gayle in one on one situations when it seemed a goal was inevitable.

The turnaround after the break signalled a spirited response from the home side with the style and runs of Sam Porter in particular, being the main threat, resulting on one occasion when he found Paul Scannel to send in a shot from outside the box which hit the post before ending up the wrong side of the net. However although the game was becoming a more even encounter Stansfield were still able to be the team with good movement and on several occasions during the half they might well have put the game beyond all doubt. This in fact did become the case when 25 minutes from time, Gayle found his way to the by-line to cross into the path of defender Lewis Smith who under pressure from the incoming Nunn, turned the ball into his own net. With time running out and with the game reaching its’ conclusion the Bears sought to gain some consolation but far too often they saw their crosses delivered into their opponent’s penalty area  only to find  keeper Adam Ballard more than capable of dealing with the situation.

Team:  S. Andrews, M.Jacket, L.Smith, T.Rogers, G.Owen, P.Scannel, A.Godman, P.Joyce, D.Wright, S.Porter

Subs:  Dan Phillips, Mike McKay, Harry Haswell, Ryan Rooke

Premier Division

14th Aug 2010  Lewisham Borough (Community) 3 vs 3 Hollands & Blair

PRE - MATCH COMMENTS

Paul Piggott (Hollands & Blair) - "I am expecting to go one better than last year, we are at full strength, but do have a tough start to the campaign playing three London based sides in Lewisham, Bridon Ropes and Stansfeld".

Darrell Queeley and Steve Mattis (Lewisham Borough) - "We are strong & confident for the coming season, our pace are our strong points, expectations are a top two finish and a good cup run, but it will be testing. We are under no illusions that it will be tough but we are confident after a good pre - season, today is a tough opener but we are ready and will be competitive".

Lewisham and Hollands & Blair drew 3-3 in a pulsating and nail biting opening league fixture at Ten Em Bee Sports Development Centre. Lewisham are kicking themselves having led 3-0. A slick finish by Dominic Weston after 11 minutes, weaving through the Blair defence gave Lewisham a 1-0 half time lead with Lewisham just about bossing the first half.

A brace from Michael Brown on 61 and 67 minutes gave Lewisham a 3-0 lead against the run of play, but the deficit was reduced on 68 minutes after substitute Lee Preston pulled a goal back. Sean Hetterley set up a tense a nervous last 10 minutes when he scored on 80 minutes to make it 3-2. Michael Brown then hit a post for Lewisham but Blair got the equaliser on 86 minutes through Darren Blackburn. Both teams had further chances as 8 extra minutes were added and the match finished 3-3 in what has to be said was a fair result, with Lewisham keeper Mattis pulling off a number of outstanding saves.

This really was an advert for Premier Division Kent County Football which definitely bodes well for the season but will leave supporters with many grey hairs. Hollands & Blair showed what a good side they are and the fact that you must compete for the full 90 minutes and Lewisham showed that they also this season will be a force to be reckoned with even though they will be disappointed at giving up a 3-0 lead.

Lewisham are up against Rusthall next week at the Jockey Farm ground.

Pre-Season Match - Celebration of Football in Lewisham Day

8th Aug 2010  Lewisham Borough (Community) 2 vs 2 Forest Hill Park

Lewisham ended an impressive pre-season unbeaten in a highly entertaining fixture against local rivals Forest Hill Park. Forest Hill Park who will now be competing in Division 1 West of the Vandanel Kent County League after finishing as Champions of Division 2 West, showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with this coming season and more than matched Lewisham in all departments. However Lewisham went ahead on 35 minutes after a cool finish by Dominic Weston, they looked to have put the game beyond the reach of their opponents just on half time when a stunning 35 yard strike by captain Phil Mcbean left the keeper stranded. However back roared Park and after a pressure period they finally won a penalty on 60 minutes which was slotted home by Salim Baba. Still Lewisham tested Forest Hill at every opportunity but their defence held firm. This really was end to end stuff and Forest Hill got a deserved equaliser on 85 minutes through Robert Bartley Lang. The match ending up at 2-2 even though Forest Hill had a highly debatable goal disallowed earlier.

This match was an excellent end of day exhibition to what was a fantastic first 'Celebration of Football in Lewisham Day' . This day was about celebrating all good things with football in Lewisham and was brilliantly organised by the Lewisham Football Partnership and Lewisham Council. There were a number of excellent matches with Millwall Lionesses Reserves narrowly losing out 1-0 to Colchester reserves, the Lewisham Borough (Community) under 16 Academy beating a Lewisham Representaive side 2-0 and in the Junior tournament Moonshot FC narrowly overcoming AC Paulista in an excellent under 11's final. Other participants in the day included Brockley County (who fielded two sides), Culverley Rangers, HF Sports, Lewisham Youth and Lewisham Junior Soccer Team (LJST).

Presentations were carried out by Ray Simpson Chief Executive of Lewisham Borough (Community) FC who is also Chairman of the Lewisham Football Partnership and special guest for the day Councillor Chris Best the Lewisham Cabinet Member with responsibility for sport in the Borough.

Pre-Season Match - David Leach Memorial Trophy

4th Aug 2010  Baldon Sports 2 vs 2 Lewisham Borough (Community) PENS 3-5

This match was a memorial match in aid of our Physio Richard Leach whose father passed away and who is connected with both clubs. The match was played for the David Leach Trophy and will be an annual pre - season fixture.

This memorial match was played as a tribute to ours and Baldon Sports Physio Richard Leach whose father passed away last year. In an entertaining fixture Lewisham opened the scoring after 20 minutes through Dominic Weston who even when he slotted it in was looking the wrong way. Tony Green equalised for Baldon 10 minutes later. Jay Garrick then restored the lead just before half time. Lewisham who did boss most of the match never quite dominated through goals and Baldon with some interesting challenges made sure that they were always in with a shout. John Healey equalised for Baldon with ten minutes remaining. The match went to a penalty shoot with only Baldon's Dean Dolby missing his which resulted in Lewisham winning 5-3 with penaties from Adrian Griffith, Sayce Lewis, Phil Mcbean, Ali Mohammed and the winning penalty from Sean Palmer. Man of Match was former Lewisham player Adam Dolby (Baldon Sports), which was chosen and presented by Richard Leach. This will be an annual pre season fixture and the first winners of the David Leach memorial trophy are Lewisham Borough.

First Division Play Off Match

15th May 2010  Bromley Green 0 vs 1 Charlton Athletic Community

KELVYN Williams scored the 87th minute winner to clinch the South East London club's promotion to the Vandanel Kent County League Premier Division next season for the first time, after a 1-0 win at Bromley Green in the Division 1 play-off on Saturday.

Fittingly for a player who wears shirt number 32, it was his 32nd goal of the season, shooting low beyond Craig Smith to settle, a tight, tense, tetchy contest, with so much depending on the outcome for both clubs.

However Green substitute Paul Allen was a whisker away from taking the game into extra-time, just failing to get a proper touch on the ball, with almost the last kick of the game.

The game came to life in the second half, and Tyrus Gordon missed a great chance to put Charlton ahead, after a poor first touch, and Smith then had to race off his line and head clear. Jordan McTigue forced Smith to save another effort, and then Williams saw his shot bounce off the far post.

Substitute Samuel Musundi shot wide from close range, while Green's best efforts were a Michael Doyle free-kick saved by Charlton goalkeeper Billy Senington, and substitute Tom Poyner's effort that went wide,

The game look destined for extra-time, until Williams popped up with the late decider.

Barry Bundock West Kent Challenge Shield Final

11th May 2010  Bridon Ropes 2  vs  2 Tudor Sports AET 5-6 Pens

These two Division One West rivals produced the best of this season's Cup Finals in an excellent contest as Tudor Sports came from 2-0 down at half-time to retain the Barry Bundock West Challenge Shield at Greatness Park in Sevenoaks.

Two years ago they lost on penalties to Phoenix Sports on the same ground, before returning 12 months later to win it for the first time with a 1-0 win over Tonbridge Invicta.

Spot-kicks decided this game, with Tudor goalkeeper Danny Skinner at the centre of most of the important moments in a game in front of another good crowd which included Sunderland and former Charlton defender Michael Turner.

Skinner was beaten twice in the first half, Bridon's James Doherty shooting inside his near post for the opener, and then James Wild scoring one of the most spectacular goals seen in a County League final for a long time.

There seemed nothing on when he collected the ball on the touchline, but his curling speculative cross caught Skinner flat footed as it sailed over him, and nestled into the the far corner.

Tudor had their moments as well at the other end, Sansom struck the far post with one effort and George Lowes also shot wide.

Bridon though were the better side in the first half, but Tudor's Matt O' Brien pulled one back after the break, and then Chris Rowley's free-kick sneaked in at the near post, beating Dean Harpley - game on.

Former Kent League striker Glen McTaggart hit the post and Lowes slid another effort wide, but both teams couldn't find the winner, and 30 minutes extra-time also failed to settle the contest, so it was down to the shoot-out.

The first 10 penalties were all scored, but then Harpley blazed his effort over the bar, leaving James Rowe to score to win the final, and maintain Tudor's excellent progress since joining the League in 2006/7. Bridon also played their full part in the game which was a fine advert for County League football, well done to all involved.

PENALTIES: Dan Dawson (Bridon Ropes) 1-0, Chris Rowley (Tudor Sports) 1-1, Daryl Wheeler (Bridon Ropes) 2-1, (ball bounced in off Skinner), Sam Maloney (Tudor Sports) 2-2, James Wild (Bridon Ropes) 3-2, Daniel Gill (Tudor Sports 3-3, Luke Doherty ( Bridon Ropes) 4-3, Steve Almond (Tudor Sports) 4-4, James Doherty ( Bridon Ropes) 5-4, Glen McTaggart (Tudor Sports) 5-5, Dean Harpley (Bridon Ropes) -missed, James Rowe (Tudor Sports -5-6.)

The trophies and medals were presented by John Mugridge Life Vice President of the Vandanel Kent County League.

KCFA Intermediate Challenge Shield Final

8th May 2010  Phoenix Sports 1 vs Cray Valley (PM) 0

Mark Greatorex clinched victory for Phoenix Sports with the second-half goal that won the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield final at Beckenham on Saturday.

The experienced striker scored with 20 minutes left of the tie on a cold, wet afternoon at Eden Park Avenue, scoring with a left foot angled close range finish, after the first effort had been blocked.

However it took a fine reaction save from goalkeeper Dean Martin, tipping the ball onto his own bar, to keep them in front as Cray Valley looked for a way back into the match, postponed a month ago at Tonbridge due to a waterlogged pitch.

The two sides had scored a total of 32 goals in reaching the final, but the game never reached any great heights on a wet, cold afternoon at Eden Park Avenue.

Cray's Joe Fitzgerald was lucky to escape a serious facial injury when he collided with a pitch support late in the first half, but managed to carry on after treatment.

Both teams looked for an early lead, but the final pass always seemed to go astray, with several players finding it difficult to stay on their feet on the greasy turf.

The weather failed to improve in the second with steady rain continuing to fall, and neither side able to breakthrough.

However Greatorex finally broke the deadlock, and although Cray Valley never gave up, Martin's save proved crucial, and apart from a couple of late scares, Phoenix held onto win.

Bill Manklow Inter Regional Challenge Cup Final

6th May 2010 - Fleet Leisure 0 vs Hollands & Blair 2

Two second-half goals by Darren Blackburn and Cliff Eldridge helped Hollands & Blair retain the Bill Manklow Inter-Regional Challenge Cup at Maidstone Road. They are the first side to win it in successive seasons since Stansfeld O& B Club achieved the feat in 2002/3.

Fleet were forced into a late change when skipper Ricki Holmes was ruled out, and then lost Adam Ellwood after only eight minutes to be replaced by James Ruff. Both teams took time to settle, and there was little goalmouth action at either end in the first half, when Blair won eight corners, without any real end product.

Lee Preston had the only real chance, shooting wide, but Blair, who beat Orpington 2-1 after extra time on the same ground 12 months ago went in front two minutes after the break. The ball came in from the left, and Blackburn volleyed past Fleet goalkeeper Gary Arterton. It was 2-0 13 minutes later when Cliff Eldridge netted after the first effort had been blocked.

Former winners Fleet who beat Bly Spartans to lift the trophy in 2008, had appeals for a penalty turned down, and five bookings didn't help their cause either, the last following the final Whistle.

Fleet Leisure: Gary Arterton, Mark Handley, Dan Wells, Ben Williams Dean Stephens, Craig Brigden, Adam Ellwood, Matt Balson, Carl Tompsett, Steve Ward, Peter Huggens.

Eastern Region Les Leckie Cup Final

5th May - Woodstock Park 1 vs 0 Bromley Green
Kerry Glover's close-range finish helped Division 1 East champions Woodstock Park win the Les Leckie Cup for the first time at Salters Lane. Glover netted the 65th minute winner, converting a cross from the right past goalkeeper Craig Smith in front of a 200 plus crowd.

The game was a lively affair, if short of clear cut chances, with referee Valentine Anekwe waving away strong Woodstock penalty claims inside the opening two minutes. Tommy Price and Dave Boichat went close twice in the first half for the Sittingbourne side.

Bromley Green, celebrating their 80th anniversary this year, wore a special kit to mark the occasion and their first chance fell to Micky Doyle who struck the woodwork, but they didn't really test Woodstock goalkeeper Jack Rankin, a member of Kent's victorious FA County Youth Cup winning side at Gillingham last month.

The second-half -like the first was well contested, but Woodstock Park broke the deadlock just past the hour mark thanks to Glover, and then Adam Overton's effort was saved by Smith. Green though battled away, manager Dave Smith sent on three substitutes, Rob Greenfield, Linton Hayles and Tom Poyner, but Woodstock held on to win the tie between two clubs who could still meet again next season in the Premier Division.

Mr Anekwe kept a firm hold on the tie, showing six yellow cards on the night.

County League vice-president Doug Leckie, presented the trophy, donated by his father and medals at the end of the game.

A word too for the supporters of both clubs who added to the atmosphere on the night.

Reserve Division Cup Final Tie

27th April 2010 - Westerham Reserves 1 v 0 New Romney Reserves

Luke Dyer scored the first-half winner as Westerham won the Reserve Division Cup beating New Romney at Sevenoaks on Tuesday night.

Dyer's neat finish from inside the area came after 15 minutes, and settled a tie, which got a little feisty in the first-half, but settled down after the break to develop into a well fought contest.

Westerham might have added to their lead in the first half, and created the more openings in the game, but New Romney's best spell came in the second half, when they were denied twice by goalkeeper Matt Ramsey.

He also stopped a low cross by Jim Smith, and immediately launched a counter-attack, but Billy Abrahart's cross failed to find a team mate in the box. Billy Turner and Dyer again went close, while Ramsey pulled off another good stop two minutes from time.

The game was well supported by both clubs with more than 200 there to see it.

Westerham captain Russell Edelstone received the cup from League President Eddie Diplock.

Westerham: Matt Ramsey, Nathan Martin, Tony Wickham, Kevin Elliott, Tony Lockwood, Russell Edelstone (capt), Luke Dyer, Tim Morse, James Jarman, Max Jeffreys, Billy Abrahart,

London Intermediate Cup Final

27th March 2010  Cray Valley (PM) 2 vs Erith Town Res (AET 1-1)

A Matt Knuckey goal deep into extra time secured Cray their 3rd London Cup success against a resilient and spirited Erith Town side. Manager Willie O’Sullivan was delighted with his teams’ victory and praised his players for turning round what can only be described as a dreadful start to the season. Back in September no one could see where the next win was coming from. However, the injection of a few new players and the talented youngsters finding their feet quickly at a higher level has resulted in one trophy at least in Willie’s first season in charge.

Like most cup finals, this could never be described as a classic. Both sides were evenly matched with a mixture of experienced campaigners, young energetic players, ball winners and skilful players. The game was played at the Met Police ground at Imber Court, which coincidently was the venue where Cray played their first ever London Cup final in 1999. On that occasion they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Canning Town and it was apparent from the early exchanges that the odd goal would settle this encounter.

Cray welcomed back Ben Healy, Matt Knuckey and Joe Matthews and therefore, were able to name a full strength side. Greg Summersby and Myles Warren dropped to the bench and with Michael Munday ineligible and Moosh Olarunmishe injured, Michael Scowen was able to return to the squad following his recovery from a knee injury. Cray started the game brightly and immediately created the first goal scoring opportunity. Paul Votier won the ball well in the air and directed the ball to the feet of ‘Geordie’ Springett. He held the ball up well, threaded a superb pass through to Callum O’Sullivan but he shot tamely straight into the arms of Erith keeper Dean Nash.

Despite having the majority of the play it was Erith that almost opened the scoring in the 26th minute. A long ball was played over the top of the Cray defence and as keeper Back narrowed the angle of the oncoming Erith striker the shot hit his arm as he advanced outside the area. The crowd and the Cray bench feared the worst as the assistant referee raised his flag. After a lengthy discussion referee Mark Sarah marched towards Back and reached to his pocket for the inevitable card. Fortunately for Back and Cray, who did not have a substitute keeper on the bench, the colour of the card was yellow!  The resultant free kick was blasted straight at the Cray wall and cleared.

With the score goalless at half time it was looking increasing more like a single goal would settle the game for either side. The first chance of the second half was created by Cray when the lively Knuckey won a free kick on the edge of the Erith area. Joe Fitzpatrick whipped in the free kick but despite winning the ball well in the air Votier could not direct his header on target. A costly miss because in the 57th minute Erith took the lead. Hesitation in the Cray defence allowed Joe Plant to create the yard of space he needed to fire a low shot past the unsighted Back. The big question now was how would Cray react?

Earlier in the season it’s fair to say that a defeat was the inevitable answer but this Cray side has developed a fighting spirit of late. The defence in particular deserves a special mention. The average age of Healy, Prall, Miller and Matthews is only 19 but they have developed a great understanding and this will only improve over time.

Despite going a goal behind Cray remained organised and more importantly patient. Their reward came with 15 minutes remaining, when a well taken corner by Knuckey was headed home from short range by skipper Springett. Not entirely sure about the celebration though but his goal put Cray level and sent the game into extra time.

Both teams approached extra time with an air of caution and chances were limited. Myles Warren replaced the tiring Votier in the second period and almost made an immediate impact. Warren has scored 2 late goals recently after coming off the bench and within minutes of being introduced he received a pass from O’Sullivan but on this occasion he shot wide. With the prospect of the dreaded penalty shoot out looming Knuckey struck the crucial blow. With literally minutes remaining Springett’s long ball was collected by Knuckey who lobbed the ball over the advancing Nash. For a moment it looked like the ball was going to bounce past the post but Knuckey followed it in to nod the ball over the line from a yard. The programme notes were correct - when Knuckey’s on form Cray invariably win and it was certainly the case on this occasion!

Selecting a Man of the Match was so difficult because on the day every player put in a 9/10 performance but if there was one individual that shaded the award it was centre back Alex Prall. He was outstanding all game and his defending was top class.

With one cup in the bag, next up is Cray’s second county cup final against League rivals Phoenix. The game will be played at Tonbridge Angels, 3.00pm kick off.

Cray team – Back, Miller, Healy, Prall, Votier (Warren), Matthews, Danso, Fitzpatrick, Knuckey, Springett, O’Sullivan.  Unused Subs Scowen, Ingram, Martin, Summersby
